EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION FOR SHEFFIELD

Installing the base rails

EWI STARTER TRACK
The track is what holds the insulation boards level and are fitted above the damp proof course, this is what protects the bottom of the system. A base track mesh bead is fitted to the track and then over laps onto the EPS boards to stop any cracking.

ADHESIVE AND MECHANICAL FIX
The correct way to install EWI boards is to adhesive fix the boards, adhesive is required around the perimeter of every insulation board which helps to get the wall completely flat and are attached in brick bond formation. Around doors and windows they are all interlocked at the corners to stop any cracking. After 24 hours we then mechanically fix them together which is a nail fixing or screw dependent upon the specified system we are applying.

BEADING AND STRESS PATCHES
Once the boards are fitted, next we prepare all the doors and windows with a mesh beading which is adhesively fixed into place. Stress patches are fibre mesh cut into squares, this is placed over every overlap around the doors and windows which strengthens and stops cracking.

BASECOAT AND REINFORCED FIBRE MESH
The base coat is made up of two passes of render and typically to the thickness of 6mm,with a fibre mesh embedded into the render and sits just underneath the surface.

SILICONE THIN COAT
Once the basecoat has dried its then finished with a silicone primer, the thin coat render is then applied. The silicone comes in different aggregates from 0.5mm to 3mm, there are several finishes with different prices, there is acrylic, ,silicone and full silicone with all the major brands offering this.

MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY

On every EWI system we have a specification from the manufacturer to follow, we send pictures and detailed information of the installation. We are a registered installer to all the brands we use to get the manufacturers warranty's.
BENEFITS OF EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION
Improve Thermal UV
Improving UV value means that a property is kept at a comfortable temperature throughout all different weather conditions. Whatever the weather, one of the benefits of EWI is that it can ensure that the inside of your property is the perfect temperature for feeling comfortable.By lowering the u-values this is a great way to reduce energy bills by less heat escaping through the walls means your boiler doesn't need to work as hard. 90mm of EPS ( enhanced expanded polystyrene) can cut your heating part of your energy bill by halve. Also this with the fact that many older solid wall properties are get damp by applying your home in a watertight, insulated render system can significantly improve your internal living space by providing a drier, more comfortable home.
there are 3 targets that you need to be aware of
-
EWI render systems on existing properties
-
EWI render systems on extensions on existing properties
-
EWI render systems on new builds.
If we are adding insulation to existing properties we are only required to hit the targets if we are installing the insulated render system on more than 25% of the entire property area.
This means that if you are trying to improve just a small part of the house, such as the walls of an exposed cold bedroom, then we can potentially add as little insulation as you want (only if it's less than 25% of the total wall area).
A quick breakdown of UV values every building fabric (brick, block ) has an existing u-value or a level of heat loss. If we add insulation to your property , there will be less heat loss, so the u-value decreases. The targets set by the Building control can be used on every type of wall; the starting u-value will be different, and therefore, the amount (thickness) of insulation required to hit the targets.

Insulation Thickness
what thickness of insulation will achieve this whether you are using mineral wool or EPS.
To hit a u-value of 0.30, you require 90mm of EPS or 110mm of mineral wool
To hit a u-value of 0.28, you require 100mm of EPS or 120mm of mineral wool
To hit a u-value of 0.18, you require 190mm of EPS or 210mm of mineral wool

Cooler Summers, Warmer Winters
EWI Insulation not only ensures that your property stays warmer in the winter, but also protects it from gaining too much heat in the summer. Other benefits are by ensuring that heat generated inside your property remains within the building, while also stopping the cold air outside from entering your home. In the summer the reverse happens the walls do not absorb the heat radiated by the sun, and therefore do not transfer it into your home.
Energy Bills
By ensuring that heat remains within your home, your energy bills are dramatically reduced. A four bed detached house may expect to save around £450 a year on heating energy bills when installing 90mm of EPS onto a solid brick wall.

Aesthetics
EWI installation includes a silicone (THINCOAT) render finish on top of the insulation boards to ensure the system is watertight. This is not only highly functional but also incredibly aesthetically appealing. The silicone render topcoat comes in a wide range of colours and different textures for a unique finish that will stand out for years to come.

Carbon Footprint
Also your carbon footprint is dramatically reduced with external wall insulation because you use less gas and electric heating throughout the year. Therefore you will helping benefit from the fact that you are contributing towards helping the environment.

Lifespan of Building Fabric
EWI covers the entirety of the exterior of your home, wrapping it in a thermal blanket that not only prevents heat loss but also protects the building(walls) against weathering. The silicone render that finishes the system benefits the property by acting as a weather-proof barrier, preventing water ingress and damage from extremes of weather.

Thermal Bridging
Thermal bridging is when there are gaps within an insulation system. These gaps will cause heat loss which is higher, which then gets concentrated to this area which then allows water and condensation to gather. Thermal bridging will significantly reduce the effectiveness of insulation, but with EWI thermal bridging is minimised due to the fact that the system is external and is completely sealed.

Damp and Condensation
Insulation will slow the rate of heat transfer by retaining the heat within the walls; condensation occurs when warm air comes into contact with cold walls. Because the external walls of your home are warmer because of the EWI, condensation is vastly reduced, and therefore helping improve indoor air quality.
Another key benefit is the protection they provide to your home exterior walls. The render acts as a shield against weathering, preventing rain, wind, and frost from damaging your property. This reduces the risk of cracks and structural wear, extending your homes building’s lifespan. From an aesthetic perspective, insulated render systems allow for a wide variety of finishes, colours, and even textures, giving you the freedom to achieve a desired look while enhancing your home’s energy performance.
